Tools on 18th Century Convict Ships Sep 20

18 century pleasure boatingBack in the middle of the 18th Century, the jails in Britain were absolutely overflowing, there were so many criminals locked up. Believe it or not, but roughly 150 different crimes could get you the death sentence back then, so there were more people waiting for the gallows than could actually be hanged!

You may have heard that Australia was used as almost a prison island – well, this is how that started. Because there simply wasn’t enough room for all the convicts, we started to ship them overseas in specialised “convict ships”. These ships had their own unique tools, which were of course rather different to what we’re used to nowadays. Here are some of the most commonly used ones.

Torture Devices

Yes, sadly, we were still into torturing prisoners in those days. A number of the bigger convict ships had a selection of different torture devices built in to them, and the ship masters were often all too keen to make good use of them while they could. Read the rest of this entry »

Which Hobby is Right for Me? Sep 17

It’s the classic question that somehow trips us all up in conversations with new people, job interviews and first dates: “So, do you have any hobbies?” Few of us are willing to admit that we don’t really do anything specific with our time, so we mutter something about our love of music or interest in films or cooking. This is all well and good, but sometimes a hobby can be a fantastic talking point and teach you new skills you never thought you could master. To get the ball rolling, here is some inspiration for some new activities to get involved in… Read the rest of this entry »

Things to Consider When Chartering a Yacht Jul 04

Getting away on a yacht with your family or friends is a fun vacation idea. Although, just like land-based vacations, you have to consider many things in order to find the right yacht, and make your vacation a success. Here are some of them:

chartering a yacht

Budget
Budget is something that is too important to miss. Remember that there are a lot of agencies that offer charter services around the world. It’s easy to get confused with this variation, so the best thing to do is to look out yachts through their rates. This can narrow down your list, making your decision making easier than you imagined it to be. Word to the wise, though: don’t go for a big yacht if your group is under fifteen. The bigger the yacht, the more it will cost.

Kinds of yacht
As part of the planning process, you will have to decide on which kind of yacht that you will use for your trip. Learn about the different kinds of yacht available first. Then, pick the yacht that can accommodate the specific requirements of your group. “These (sailing) yachts are great for a family holiday, a fun adventure with friends as well as racing charters. It is also possible to charter a few sailing yachts to accommodate larger groups for flotillas or team building activities,” says SailingEurope.com.

Facilities
Obviously, the yacht that you will rent will serve as your home during your sea adventure. So, as much as possible, you want it to be as comfortable and safe as possible. Find out if the yacht has the amenities that you would expect to see such as full kitchen, entertainment center, and Jacuzzi, among others. Wi-Fi is another essential offering that you should not overlook.

Having Wi-Fi access while on board allows you to become updated about news from the mainland, including lottery results. New lottery winners Richard and Cathy Brown can attest to this claim. On the sixth day of their 10-week sailing trip around Britain, the retired couple found out through an app that their numbers came up, and that they have £6,123,395 winnings. Aside from apps, you can also visit lottery.net/ with a stable internet connection. This website features the latest lottery numbers from all of the major lottery draws worldwide, which means that regardless of your location, you can access the results back home even while in the middle of the sea.

5 Tips for Purchasing a preowned boat Jun 04

If the idea of spending your days rocking on a gentle wave, with the sea breeze blowing through your hair sounds like a slice of paradise, you might be ready to buy your own boat. But boats are an incredibly expensive purchase to consider. Not only is their sticker price massive, but the upkeep of any boat is significant. Fuel is pricey, licensing has a cost, and you’ve got to pay to keep it somewhere, both during the season and in a dry dock over the winter. All those costs add up, which often leave boat ownership to only the very rich. But you can make it a bit more affordable if you’re willing to buy a pre-owned boat. Boats that are several years old are often still in impeccable shape, and there’s no shame in buying used. You’ll still enjoy the fishing, and the flowing breeze as you kick the engine up another gear. But as with any used purchase, you’ll have to do a bit more digging to make sure it works out. Here are five tips for purchasing a pre-owned boat.

Pre-Owned Boat

First off, before you ever go out shopping make sure you are crystal clear about what type of boat you are looking to purchase. If you just do a search for all used boats you’ll find hundreds of options. That will make it almost impossible to start shopping. So look over the various brands of boat manufacturers, and consider your needs. Think about the various types of boats, their size, the power you need and what you think you can afford. Once you have the specifics in mind, you’ll be much better equipped to start shopping.

Now that you’ve got these specifics down, start your searching. Looking online is a great way to get things going, as you can check out the specifics of a number of options all at the same time. In the end, you’ll still have a wide range of choices. But in general you’ll want to look for the newest boat that you can afford. That means both years in use and hours put on the engine. Check out some of the prices that come up and see how you feel about the work you’ve done so far. You might have to give up on some of the accessories you were looking for to make sure the boat will last many additional years of use.

At this point you should have whittled down the hundreds of options into perhaps a dozen. Call up the owners and ask about transferrable warranties. Are any of these boats still covered by the manufacturer? If so, make sure that warranty is included in the listed price. If not, see what else is possible. If the boat is six years old or younger you should be able to purchase your own service contract. Keep that in mind when setting your budget.

With a final handful of boats in mind, it’s time to get out to the dock and see them in person. Now is the time for a careful inspection. You’ll want to look for any evidence of damage, improper manufacture or overall neglect. If you’re not that familiar with boats, do some research so you know what you’re looking for. Remember, if you are seeing quite visible wear and tear, it’s a good bet that the mechanical elements of the boat haven’t been well maintained either.

Finally, ask the owner for a sea trial. This may not be possible at boat shows, but any time a private citizen puts up their boat for sale, they should be willing to take you out. This serves two purposes. First and foremost, it gives you a chance to see how the boat handles, and make sure everything works the way it should. But it also allows you to get to know the owner and ask some questions. They’ll probably be more relaxed now, giving you the opportunity to ask about the boat’s history and why this owner has decided to sell. You’ve got to make sure that this seemingly ‘good deal’ is truly that, and not just a lemon situation that’s being covered up.

Basic Tips for Yachting Novices Apr 17

yachting novices

Are you just taking to the seas of your own accord for the first time? In that case, there’s probably a lot you don’t know, even if you’ve taken a course or two. Even if you think you know everything, there is more than likely going to be something you’ve missed, and even the most prepared of sailors can easily overlook one or two small things.

Here is a small list of some handy sailing tips – they can be useful for rookies and veterans alike, so read up and head out onto open waters more prepared!

Choose Your Waters Wisely

If you’re just starting out and not yet familiar with some of the basics of sailing, possibly the most important thing to do is to make sure that you always choose to sail in calm waters, preferably with few other boaters around.

You want light winds and minimal traffic – this will make things easier and less stressful for you while you’re getting to grips with the ins and outs of sailing.

Bigger Ain’t Better

A small boat is much easier to handle, and uses fewer sails and lines, meaning you’ll be able to captain it with less difficulty. A smaller dinghy is easier to manoeuver – don’t get cocky and try to steer a massive boat.
